I did a bit of debugging on this myself. I too had a TP770 with Linux 2.2.x
(and that was  *nice* machine, let me tell you) with the same problem.  I
added some debug messages to the open routine in the PCMCIA ibmtr_cs.c. The
buffer length being sent was something ridiculously small, like 11 bytes or
something. It was very strange. My recommendation is to add some more
extensive debug messages in ibmtr_cs.c to see what those parameters passed
to the TR NIC are.
