Don't set up the network interface using normal configuration tools (ie RedHat Control Panel). Let pcmcia do the work.

As you are using a thinkpad, comment out this part of the include memory line in
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts

Couldn't get -0xA20 IO Space

As you are using 2.0.36 and 3.0.5, I would suspect the include memory line to be the problem.
